Coaching is a collaborative process; we work together. The work orients to specific tasks, such as professionalism or parenting, and can be on general themes, also known as life coaching. The client sets the goals. A significant component of the coaching process, especially in the beginning, is to clarify goals so they powerfully reflect the client’s true aspirations. Coaching is focused on action steps, encouraging the practice of that which will most effectively meet the client’s goals and provide accountability toward that end.
Coaching is not a clinical process, and thus provides no diagnosis. It’s focused on the here-and-now and practicality. Therapy, aside from diagnosing clients, often seeks to pinpoint the origin of emotional issues and promotes the understanding of the same. A good rule of thumb is that if your issues are disrupting your personal or professional life, therapy is the most appropriate starting point. Therapy is insight-oriented, and with insight comes ability to change. Coaching is often effective alongside therapy, as it builds upon the healing that can take place in the therapeutic process.
HomeBase coaching services are billed at the same rate as counseling, and can work within the same sliding-scale on a case-by-case basis. Since coaching is not a clinical service, health insurance will not provide coverage. When there is a diagnosed condition to address, therapy is the best consideration, can be covered by insurance, and oftentimes, can include the practical aspects that coaching features.
